Long-exposure black-and-white photo of the Lincoln Memorial statue with constantly passing visitors

Enshrined Forever

Lincoln Memorial, Washington, D.C.

I set up inside the chamber, and with everyone too busy to notice me, I had time to work the shot. People streamed past the whole time, while Lincoln has sat there for decades — that contrast, the still monument against the flowing crowd, was the whole idea. I held a five-second exposure so the visitors blurred into ghosts while the statue stayed perfectly sharp.
