Waiting Out the Weather

Guitar Lake, Sequoia National Park, California

Storm light is the one gift of a Sierra afternoon in July — hard directional sun beneath a heavy lid, and gone within minutes. Seventy millimetres compresses the cloud down onto the basin, and the two figures stay tiny at the waterline because that is the honest proportion of the place. Monochrome: the cloud had all of the drama and none of the colour worth keeping.
