Big Arroyo, Sequoia National Park, California
A flat grey afternoon over bare, glacier-scoured rock — in colour it is worth nothing at all. Monochrome turns the slabs structural: fracture lines become leading lines, and the separation between polished stone and shadowed cracks carries what colour could not. I set the horizon high and gave the foreground two thirds of the frame, because here the ground is the subject and the peaks are only the backstop.
