Black-and-white photo of a mule pack train backlit by the rising sun on the South Kaibab Trail

An Older Rhythm of the Canyon

South Kaibab, Grand Canyon, AZ

While climbing back up to the South Rim, I had to stop and wait for a big mule train heading down to Phantom Ranch. I took the chance to photograph them against the canyon with the morning sun rising behind them. I shot straight into the low light and let the scene fall toward silhouette, working it in black and white so the long shadows became part of the frame.
