Convict Lake, Mammoth Lakes, California
About five hours on the shore of Convict Lake for one frame. It's a time blend: a 900-second exposure to pull enough light onto Mount Morrison and Laurel Mountain, and a 20-second one for the sky so the stars stay as points instead of trails. Neither works alone at midnight — the long one smears the sky, the short one leaves the mountains black. Together they're close to what the eye almost saw.
