Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Death Valley National Park, California
Sunrise, but barely — the contrast never really arrived, and that turned out to be the mood worth keeping. One dune low in the frame, a second behind it, and a cloud above running the other way, so the eye zigzags up through the picture. There is almost no tonal separation anywhere in it. This one holds together on shape alone, which is rarer than good light.
