Two backpackers walking a rock-lined path through willows below Outpost Camp, granite spires above, Mount Whitney Trail.

Through the Willows

Mount Whitney Trail, John Muir Wilderness, California

The two figures are day hikers I met thirty minutes out of the Portal — we would climb, camp, and summit together before their trail ended and mine began. At 17mm the willow corridor does the work: green walls, a stone floor, and the spires stacked overhead in the same frame. The Whitney trail is usually shot from above, looking down at Consultation Lake; its bottom half is quietly gorgeous.
