Mount Whitney Trail, John Muir Wilderness, California
Past Outpost Camp the forest quits and the mountain turns to stone staircases. This is honest midday light — no golden hour, no drama, just granite glare and a sky so dark blue it reads processed when it is simply altitude. I kept the hikers small under the ridge because that proportion, tiny people on enormous stone, is the actual sensation of climbing this trail with a week of food on your back.
