Trail Camp, Mount Whitney, California

Trail Camp, 12,000 feet, the evening before the summit. We got in early on purpose — altitude respects nothing but time, and the plan was a 3:30am start. I shot into the sinking sun and let it flare over the ridge, because the honest picture of this place is not a landscape: it is people sitting on rocks, eating early dinners, quietly negotiating with tomorrow.
